How Wigs are made?

The use of wigs a has greatly increased in recent times. The main reason being that wigs used to be worn for either prosthetic or cosmetic reasons earlier and occasionally in special acts or parties. But the use of wigs has changed to some extent and it is also being use for convenience reasons by many people across the globe who short for time.

There are many people who simply do not have the time to spend hours at a hair stylist, having their hair styled. Using pre-styled wigs is a very good option for them. Have you ever wondered how much effort into the making of these wigs.

Preparing the hair:

Hair preparation process

The manufacturing process of the hair is quite a lengthy one indeed. There are many factors to consider and a lot of work involved as better explained in short below:
  • To start with all the hair must be lying in the same direction. The method to detect this is quite simple although time consuming. You need to hold a bunch of hair in your hand and rub the ends between the fingers and thumb. The tips will turn back while the cut ends will lie straight. The important things is that if you do find hair strands running in opposite directions you need to sort them out in to two different piles prior to making a bunch.
  • Then length of the hair is also another factor to consider. They are all made uniform in a suitable size and the unusable hair is discarded. After which the hair is tied in small bundles not very tightly though.
  • The hair also needs to be inspected for nits and if found it will be treated in an appropriate manner by boiling the hair in acetic acid and also combing it through a steel toothed nitting machine.
  • At this stage the hair needs cleaning and hence is washed in soapy water along with a disinfectant after which it is dried.
  • They then need to be straighten and sorted by size and made ready for use in making a wig. In addition to which the hair can now be styled as desired as curled or waved or whatever you desire. It is yet again boiled after being styled and then made to dry in a warm oven for over 24 hours.
  • This is when the customizing process occur if it is a special wig being manufactured. It can be styled and bent in a special way so that you have that perfect fit.
Preparing the pattern:

If a pattern needs to be prepared on the basis of the customers head structure special effort is required a explained here:
  • The aim is to provide the perfect fit with these customized wigs, thus the foundation of such wigs are made as close as possible to the head of the client. This can be done either by directly taking measurements or by using a cast of the head as a model.
  • The important measurements to take are, the circumference is measured about half an inch above the hair line, at the nape of the neck as well as above each ear and finally across the front of the head.
Making the foundation:

The next process requires for the foundation to be made as explained here:
  • The making of the foundation is different from the other process. The foundation is actually cut from fine mesh silk netting that goes with the hair color. The size of the silk netting can vary although it is a small variation. The crown of the foundation is made from either silk, cotton or nylon and is cut from a coarser net. At times a portion of this is also incorporated into the wig itself.
  • The pattern that would have been prepared is placed on the wooden head shaped form.  The net foundation is then brought together on the block by means of sewing them to pieces of gallon. Usually cotton thread is used in he process.
  • In addition to which springs are inserted at strategic locations of the foundation which aid in holding the completed wig in place. They are usually made from steel or elastic bands.
Knotting:

Hair knotting

  • The procedure of attaching the hair to the net foundation is called knotting.  There are a few different methods of doing this however the single or the 'full V'  knot is the most common one. This knot is similar to that used making a latch hook rug.
  • Although if this knot is used the size of the hair that can be utilized is also fixed and cannot change. A complete full wig takes up to 30,000 to 40,000 knots and consumes up to 40 hours. The wig is then mounted wrong side and stuffed with saw dust. The inner surface of the wig need to be pressed with a hot iron to secure the knots.
Styling:

Style of hair

The process of styling the wig takes place once the wig is completed. It is gently dampened and combed using a wet comb. The wig can thus be styled as per requirements  after which it is covered with a net and dried in a warm oven.
